In a significant push for eco-friendly tourism, Arunachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, Chowna Mein, has called for a community-driven approach to tourism growth in the region. During a recent meeting with stakeholders in Itanagar on March 24, 2026, Mein emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism practices that prioritize local communities and their needs. He highlighted that the state is poised to attract more than 3.5 million tourists by 2027, and it’s essential to ensure that this growth benefits the local populace.

    Emphasizing Community Involvement in Tourism

Chowna Mein’s vision includes a shift towards a model of tourism that engages local communities more actively. “Tourism must not only be about attracting visitors but also about empowering our local people,” he stated. By involving communities in the tourism sector, the government aims to create job opportunities, enhance local cultures, and preserve the environment. This approach aligns with the growing global trend towards responsible tourism, which seeks to minimize the environmental footprint and promote cultural integrity. Mein pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh has vast potential with its rich biodiversity, unique cultures, and serene landscapes. The government plans to work closely with local leaders, artisans, and entrepreneurs to develop tourism initiatives that reflect the authentic experiences of the region. For instance, local festivals, handicrafts, and culinary traditions can be showcased to enhance visitor engagement while providing income sources for residents.

    Investment in Infrastructure and Training

To support this community-driven tourism strategy, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed the need for substantial investments in infrastructure. This includes improving roads, constructing hotels, and enhancing public facilities. He revealed that the state government has earmarked approximately ₹500 crores for tourism development projects over the next five years.

Moreover, Mein emphasized the importance of training local youth to ensure they are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in the hospitality and tourism industry. “It’s vital that our young people are trained in hospitality management and eco-tourism practices,” he noted. This focus on education will not only create jobs but also ensure that the tourism sector is sustainable and beneficial to the environment.

    Promoting Eco-Tourism as a Priority

In his address, Mein underscored that eco-tourism should be a priority for Arunachal Pradesh. The state is home to several protected areas and national parks, which are crucial for biodiversity conservation. By promoting eco-friendly tourism activities such as trekking, bird watching, and nature conservation, Arunachal can attract environmentally conscious travelers.

“We must preserve our natural heritage while allowing visitors to appreciate its beauty. Eco-tourism can play a vital role in this balance,” he remarked. The government is looking to collaborate with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and environmental groups to develop programs that raise awareness about conservation among tourists and locals alike.

    Tourism’s Role in Economic Development

The Deputy CM highlighted the potential of tourism as a key driver of Arunachal Pradesh’s economic growth. By 2027, the state anticipates an influx of tourists that could generate significant revenue and improve local livelihoods. He stated, “Tourism can be a game-changer for Arunachal. It has the power to transform lives and uplift communities if done right. We need to ensure that the benefits of tourism reach every corner of our state.”

Mein’s call for sustainable tourism growth aligns with global trends emphasizing responsible travel practices. The government envisions a tourism model that not only attracts visitors but also enriches the local culture and economy. As the state prepares to welcome millions of tourists, the focus on community involvement, infrastructure investment, and eco-tourism will shape the future of Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism landscape.

So, the commitment to sustainable and community-driven tourism growth in Arunachal Pradesh marks a significant step towards balancing economic development with environmental conservation. As the state gears up for this influx of visitors, it remains crucial that the local communities play a central role in shaping their tourism future.
