When it comes to first solo trip to malta, embarking on a solo journey can be both thrilling and daunting, and my first-ever solo trip took me to the stunning island of Malta. Known for its rich history and vibrant culture, Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in Europe, surprisingly home to over 300 churches. My adventure began in Valletta, the island’s charming old capital, where I was captivated by its narrow streets and colorful facades.

On my first evening, I dined at a quaint tapas restaurant, where a dedicated 12-year-old boy served me. His father owns the establishment, and the young server shared his passion for Muay Thai and Taekwondo, showcasing a level of dedication that was truly impressive for his age. As I enjoyed my meal, I asked him for recommendations on what to explore the following day, hoping to keep my itinerary spontaneous. He enthusiastically suggested visiting Mdina Gate and Rabat, which set the tone for an unforgettable day ahead. Originally reported by r/travel.

First Solo Trip To Malta: Discovering Mdina: The City of Silence

The next morning, I set off to explore Mdina, often referred to as the “City of Silence.” The historic area is known for its serene ambiance and beautifully preserved architecture. Walking through Mdina felt like stepping back in time; the narrow, winding streets were adorned with stunning medieval buildings and rich history. The city is not only photogenic but also impressively clean, enhancing the overall experience.

As I wandered through the streets, I marveled at the breathtaking views overlooking the surrounding countryside. The tranquility of Mdina was a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern life, providing a perfect escape. I spent hours exploring, snapping photos, and absorbing the rich history that envelops the city. The Michelin-starred restaurants in the area offered tantalizing local cuisine, which I couldn’t resist trying as well.

Rabat: A Hidden Gem of Malta

After soaking in the sights of Mdina, I ventured to nearby Rabat, which turned out to be my favorite destination thanks to the young waiter’s advice. Rabat’s charm lies in its vibrant culture and local atmosphere. The streets were alive with the sounds of chatter and laughter, making it a delightful place to explore. I stumbled upon various shops, selling local crafts and delicious treats, which made for perfect souvenirs.

One of the highlights of my time in Rabat was visiting St. Paul’s Catacombs, an ancient burial site that provided a fascinating glimpse into Malta’s early Christian history. The intricate designs and the sheer age of the catacombs left me in awe, further enriching my experience of Malta’s historical tapestry. I spent hours wandering through the town, capturing its essence through my lens, and enjoying every moment of my exploration.

    Weather Woes in Sliema

My adventure took a turn as I headed to Sliema on the following days. Although my friend had recommended this local shopping town, the weather was less than cooperative. Heavy rain and strong winds made my exploration challenging. At one point, my umbrella broke, flying away in the gusts, which almost made me throw in the towel and retreat to my hotel.

But then I remembered, “I’m not made of sugar,” and decided to embrace the unpredictable weather. I looked up things to do in Sliema and discovered an intriguing cat statue near the coastline, which piqued my interest. The sculpture, set against the backdrop of the deep blue Mediterranean waters, offered a striking visual that made braving the elements worthwhile. The promenade, although damp, was still beautiful, and I enjoyed the views, imagining what it would be like on a sunny day.

Throughout my journey in Malta, I felt an overwhelming sense of safety as a solo female traveler. The locals were friendly and welcoming, making it an excellent destination for anyone contemplating a solo trip. Malta’s unique blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty has left an indelible mark on my heart. I look forward to returning and exploring even more of what this beautiful country has to offer.
