In a significant move to enhance tourism infrastructure, the Maharashtra government has announced plans to construct A Modern Jetty At the iconic Gateway of India. This initiative aims to accommodate the increasing number of tourists flocking to the site, particularly in light of the anticipated surge during the holiday season. Minister Aaditya Thackeray revealed these plans on March 19, 2026, during a press briefing.

    Addressing Tourist Demand

The Gateway of India is a major landmark in Mumbai, frequented by millions of visitors each year. Minister Aaditya Thackeray emphasized that the new jetty will improve the overall experience for tourists. “The existing facilities are inadequate to handle the growing number of visitors, especially during peak seasons. We are committed to enhancing the infrastructure to support our tourism sector,” he stated. Originally reported by ET TravelWorld.

Thackeray pointed out that the modern jetty will not only provide better access but will also include amenities that cater to the needs of both domestic and international tourists. The project aims to streamline operations, allowing for quicker and more efficient boarding and disembarking processes.

    Investment and Development Plans

The government has allocated a budget of ₹50 crore for the construction of the new jetty. This investment will cover design, construction, and the necessary facilities to ensure a smooth transition for visitors. The project is expected to commence in the second half of 2026, with completion targeted for early 2028.

In addition to the jetty, plans include the installation of modern ticketing systems and digital information panels to assist tourists. The aim is to create a more user-friendly environment that enhances the accessibility of ferry services to popular destinations like Elephanta Island and Alibaug.

    Environmental Considerations in Development

Thackeray highlighted the importance of incorporating sustainable practices into the project. “We are keen on ensuring that our developments do not adversely impact the environment. The new jetty will be constructed with eco-friendly materials and designed to minimize ecological disruption, especially in the coastal area,” he explained.

Furthermore, the government plans to conduct an environmental impact assessment before the construction begins, ensuring that local ecosystems are preserved. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainability as Mumbai continues to develop its tourism and infrastructure.

    Impact on Local Economy

The introduction of a modern jetty at the Gateway of India is expected to significantly boost the local economy. With increased tourist traffic, local businesses, including shops, restaurants, and tour operators, are likely to benefit. Thackeray noted, “This project is not just about tourism; it’s about creating jobs and supporting local entrepreneurs. A well-developed tourism sector can provide numerous opportunities for our citizens.”

Industry experts anticipate that the improved facilities will enhance the overall attractiveness of Mumbai as a tourist destination, potentially leading to longer stays and higher spending among visitors. As the city seeks to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, such infrastructure improvements are seen as vital to revitalizing the tourism sector.

As the plans move forward, stakeholders from various sectors, including tourism, hospitality, and environmental conservation, will be invited to contribute their insights. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that the development aligns with the aspirations of the local community while addressing the needs of tourists.

The modern jetty at the Gateway of India represents a pivotal step towards enhancing Mumbai’s tourism infrastructure. With a clear focus on efficiency, sustainability, and economic growth, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to making the city a premier tourist destination in India.

As plans unfold, the local government and tourism boards will continue to engage with the public, ensuring transparency and community involvement in this significant project.
