When it comes to travelling in marrakech was the worst. is this the new norm there?, marrakech, the vibrant heart of Morocco, has long been a favored destination for travelers seeking a blend of culture and adventure. However, a recent visit by a Moroccan national and her Chinese friends has raised alarms about the current state of tourism in the city. They described their experience last week as the worst they had ever encountered, citing incidents of harassment and hostility, raising questions about whether this is becoming the new norm.

Understanding Travelling In Marrakech Was The Worst. Is This The New Norm There?

During their time in the historic medina, the trio faced unsettling instances of catcalling and harassment. The Moroccan traveler, who prefers to remain anonymous, noted that her Chinese friend was particularly targeted by men in the bustling streets. “They kept giving her weird looks and sometimes even tried to trip her while walking,” she recounted. This behavior starkly contrasts with the inviting atmosphere that many travelers expect when exploring the rich culture of Marrakech. Originally reported by r/travel.

Such experiences aren’t mere anecdotal evidence; they reflect deeper issues within the local tourism environment. As more tourists flock to the city, there are concerns that the charm of Marrakech is being overshadowed by growing incidents of disrespect and harassment. For many, the medina, with its labyrinthine alleys and markets, should be a place of enjoyment and Discovery, not discomfort.

    The Reaction from Local Vendors

Interactions with local vendors also contributed to the group’s negative experience. While it’s common for merchants in Marrakech to engage with tourists, the Moroccan traveler experienced hostility when her group declined offers. “Some of the sellers spoke to us, which is normal, but when we politely declined, they proceeded to insult us in Darija,” she explained. Understanding the local dialect allowed her to comprehend the derogatory remarks aimed at her and her friends.

In a striking turn of events, when she confronted some sellers about their lack of decorum, they became even more aggressive. “I was really hurt by how we were treated,” she expressed. This not only highlights the challenges faced by tourists but also raises ethical questions about the interaction between locals and visitors. For many travelers, the expectation is to encounter warmth and hospitality, yet this experience painted a starkly different picture.

A Shift in Tourist Experience Since 2020

This visit marked a significant departure from the Moroccan traveler’s last trip to Marrakech just before the global lockdown in 2020. “Last time I visited Marrakech was in 2020, right before lockdown, and my experience then was normal,” she recalled. The stark contrast in her experiences over the past few years begs the question: has Marrakech’s tourism landscape changed for the worse?

With increasing popularity as a travel destination, it’s conceivable that the influx of visitors could lead to shifts in local dynamics. Tourists, especially those from diverse backgrounds, may find themselves subjected to unwelcoming behaviors that were less prevalent in previous years. This unfortunate trend could deter future visitors, as was the case for the Moroccan traveler and her friends, who have vowed to avoid Marrakech in the future.

    Concerns Over Future Visits

The Moroccan traveler expressed sadness over her friends’ decision to forgo visiting Morocco altogether due to their experiences in Marrakech. “My friends never want to visit Morocco as well, which is quite sad considering so many other cities are beautiful,” she lamented. This sentiment underscores the impact that a single location can have on perceptions of an entire country.

While the Moroccan traveler contemplated reporting the aggressive vendors, the potential for lengthy police interactions deterred her from doing so. “I heard so many racist comments about my friends, and some really hurtful comments targeting me,” she said. The emotional toll of such experiences weighs heavily on travelers and may lead to broader conversations about how cities like Marrakech can preserve their welcoming spirit in an era of increasing tourism.

As the tourism sector gradually rebounds, stakeholders in Marrakech may need to address these pressing concerns to ensure that the city remains a beloved destination. The collective experiences of visitors should serve as a wake-up call for local authorities and businesses, prompting them to cultivate an environment that values respect and hospitality.
