The community of Port Alberni is mourning the loss of Norris Wayne MacCharles, who passed away on May 4, 2026, at the age of 81 at West Coast General Hospital. A devoted family man and a diligent worker, Norris leaves behind a rich legacy of dedication and service to his loved ones and the community.

A Life of Commitment and Service

Norris Wayne MacCharles was born on October 4, 1944, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. His early career began as a journeyman electrician, where he honed his skills while working for the Nova Scotia Power Corporation in Trenton. In 1974, Norris decided to move westward with his young family, seeking new opportunities. He took a position at the Alcan aluminum smelter in Kitimat, British Columbia. Two years later, in 1976, he and his family settled in Port Alberni. It was here that Norris began a long and fulfilling career with MacMillan Bloedel, specifically at the Somass Division sawmill. Over the course of 30 years, he dedicated himself to his work, ultimately retiring in 2006. Throughout his life, Norris exemplified a strong work ethic and commitment to his job, earning the respect of his colleagues and friends.

A Legacy of Family and Faith

Norris’s family was at the core of his existence. He is survived by his son Graydon (Jovy) MacCharles, daughter Jana Schwarzenbach, and granddaughters Melody and Jennifer MacCharles, and Ariana Schwarzenbach. He also leaves behind his sisters Norma Tonks and Patricia Workman, along with numerous nephews and nieces who cherished their time with him.

His wife, Lana Janet MacCharles, whom he was married to for 55 years, predeceased him. Norris’s dedication to his family extended beyond his immediate relatives. He was a respected elder at Knox Presbyterian Church, where he devoted many years to serving his faith community. His commitment to his church and the Presbyterian Men’s Group showcased his strong beliefs and desire to uplift those around him.

    A Man of Many Interests

Norris was known for his friendly demeanor and willingness to engage in conversation with anyone he met. His approachable nature made him a beloved figure within his community. He took great pride in being involved in his children’s sports activities, always cheering them on from the sidelines. Even in his later years, he played an instrumental role in supporting his granddaughter Ariana, attending her events and celebrating her achievements.

His friends and family remember him as a “salt of the earth” individual, a man whose hard work was matched only by his deep faith and love for his family. Norris had a unique ability to connect with people, often sharing stories and laughter no matter where he went.

    Celebration of Life

A graveside Celebration of Life is set to take place on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 1 PM at Greenwood Cemetery, where Norris will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife. This occasion will provide an opportunity for family and friends to gather, reflect on his life, and celebrate the indelible mark he left on those fortunate enough to know him.

As the community gathers to honor Norris Wayne MacCharles, the values he represented-hard work, family, and faith-will live on through the lives he touched. His legacy, built over a lifetime of dedication and kindness, will not be forgotten.
