The Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH) is urging the Indian government to grant the tourism sector industry status and launch a comprehensive ‘Brand Bharat’ initiative to enhance the nation’s tourism appeal. This call comes as the sector seeks to recover and thrive in a post-pandemic world, having shown remarkable resilience amidst global challenges.

    Urgent Need for Industry Status

During a recent press conference, FAITH’s leadership emphasized the critical importance of recognizing tourism as an industry. They argue that this classification would unlock a plethora of benefits, including access to infrastructure funding, tax incentives, and streamlined regulatory processes. FAITH’s Chairman, Nakul Anand, stated, “Recognizing tourism as an industry is essential for its revival and growth. Without it, we cannot tap into the potential that the sector holds for job creation and economic development.” The tourism sector contributes significantly to India’s GDP, accounting for approximately 9.2% of the total national income. As the world gradually recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, FAITH believes that now is the opportune moment to bolster this crucial segment of the economy. Introducing ‘Brand Bharat’

FAITH is also advocating for the launch of ‘Brand Bharat’, a campaign designed to reposition India as a vibrant and attractive destination for travelers worldwide. This initiative aims to promote not only the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of India but also the diverse experiences available across the country. Anand explained, “‘Brand Bharat’ would create a unified identity for Indian tourism, showcasing our unique offerings and enhancing our global visibility.” The campaign could integrate digital marketing strategies, partnerships with travel influencers, and participation in international tourism fairs to reach a broader audience.

    Economic Impact and Job Creation

The potential economic impact of these initiatives is substantial. The tourism sector in India has shown a remarkable capacity for job creation, employing approximately 42 million individuals directly and indirectly. By granting industry status and launching ‘Brand Bharat’, FAITH estimates that millions more jobs could be created, significantly reducing unemployment rates in the post-pandemic economy. Anand remarked, “Tourism is a catalyst for economic growth and job creation. By empowering this sector, we can drive recovery and build a better future for millions of Indians. We must act decisively and collaboratively to realize this vision.” The statistics speak volumes, as the sector is projected to grow substantially, contributing over $500 billion to the Indian economy by 2028, according to industry forecasts.

    Collaborative Efforts for Future Growth

To achieve these ambitious goals, FAITH has called for a collaborative approach involving both the public and private sectors. The organization encourages government agencies to engage with tourism stakeholders, ensuring that policies are conducive to growth and innovation. Anand highlighted the need for a comprehensive roadmap that outlines specific objectives and strategies for the sector. He stated, “It is crucial for all stakeholders to come together and align their efforts. A collaborative approach will ensure that we can effectively address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.” The success of ‘Brand Bharat’ and the push for industry status will rely heavily on this collective effort, as well as the commitment to sustainable tourism practices that benefit local communities and the environment.

As India stands at a crossroads in its tourism journey, the developments proposed by FAITH could pave the way for a revitalized sector. With a focus on industry recognition and a compelling national campaign, the future of tourism in India holds great promise. The government’s response to these calls will be closely watched as stakeholders remain hopeful for a positive and proactive approach that prioritizes tourism’s vital role in the nation’s economy.
