India has taken a significant step in promoting artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability within the tourism sector at the inaugural BRICS Tourism Meeting Under its chairmanship. Held in Udaipur on May 25, 2026, this meeting saw participation from tourism ministers of BRICS nations, including Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa, reflecting a unified commitment to advancing tourism while addressing environmental concerns.

    Inaugural Meeting Sets the Stage

The meeting marked the first tourism summit organized by India since it assumed the BRICS chair in January 2026. Minister of Tourism, G. Kishan Reddy, emphasized the necessity of integrating AI in tourism to improve service delivery and enhance traveler experiences. He stated, “AI technologies can significantly transform how we interact with tourists and manage resources efficiently.” The discussions included innovative applications of AI in areas like predictive analytics for tourist preferences, automated customer service, and smart travel planning. Reddy also highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism practices, stressing that the tourism sector must evolve to mitigate its environmental impact. This aligns with broader global trends where sustainability is increasingly becoming a priority in economic policies. The meeting serves as a platform for BRICS nations to share best practices and collaborate on sustainable tourism initiatives.

    Focus on Sustainable Practices

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the proposal for a joint framework aimed at fostering sustainable tourism across BRICS countries. The ministers discussed various strategies, including the promotion of eco-friendly travel options and investment in green technologies. Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, noted that sustainable practices not only benefit the environment but can also enhance economic opportunities in tourism-dependent regions.

Additionally, the ministers agreed to explore the integration of local communities into tourism development projects. This would ensure that economic benefits are distributed equitably while preserving cultural heritage. The importance of community-led tourism initiatives was emphasized, particularly in rural areas where tourism can provide vital income streams.

    Collaboration on AI Innovations

The meeting also focused on collaborative efforts in AI innovations within the tourism sector. BRICS nations are looking to share technological advancements that can improve operational efficiency and customer engagement. For instance, China has already implemented AI-driven platforms for managing tourist flows in popular destinations, which has significantly reduced congestion and enhanced visitor satisfaction.

Further discussions revolved around creating a digital knowledge-sharing platform where member countries could exchange insights and experiences related to AI applications in tourism. South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, expressed enthusiasm for such collaboration, stating that it could lead to transformative changes in how tourism is experienced and managed across the bloc.

Looking Ahead: The Path for BRICS Tourism

The BRICS Tourism Ministers’ meeting is an important milestone that sets the tone for future collaborations aimed at enhancing tourism while prioritizing sustainability and technological advancement. The initiatives discussed are expected to be formalized in a comprehensive action plan to be reviewed at the next BRICS summit.

As nations strive to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus on integrating AI and sustainable practices in tourism represents a forward-thinking approach. This strategy not only aims to revive the sector but also ensures that it contributes positively to the environment and local economies. The outcome of this meeting could very well shape the future of tourism in BRICS nations, positioning them as leaders in sustainable practices within the global tourism industry.
