In a bold move to enhance its tourism sector, India has announced the establishment of a new Integrated Tourism Promotion Agency (ITPA) aimed at revitalizing the nation’s tourism strategy. On June 6, 2026, the Ministry of Tourism unveiled the ITPA, which is designed to streamline efforts to promote India as a premier travel destination while improving the overall travel experience for visitors.

The formation of ITPA marks a significant shift in India's approach to tourism, focusing on collaboration between various stakeholders. The agency will coordinate efforts among state governments, the private sector, and international tourism organizations to create a cohesive marketing strategy. This initiative is expected to boost tourism revenue significantly, with the government targeting a 30% increase in international tourist arrivals by 2028. New Strategies to Attract Global Tourists

The Indian government aims to implement a series of innovative strategies under the ITPA framework. One of the key tactics includes leveraging digital platforms for marketing and outreach. Authorities plan to invest heavily in digital advertising campaigns that showcase India’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and unique experiences.

In addition to digital marketing, the ITPA will focus on enhancing travel infrastructure. Investments will be directed towards improving connectivity, including upgrading airports and expanding train services. The government has allocated an initial budget of ₹500 crore (approximately $60 million) for these infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on making travel more accessible and comfortable for tourists.

    Public-Private Collaboration: A Key Component

Centrally, the success of the ITPA hinges on robust collaboration between public and private sectors. The agency will facilitate partnerships with travel agencies, hotels, and local businesses to create comprehensive travel packages that cater to various tourist demographics. By involving local stakeholders, the ITPA aims to ensure that the benefits of tourism are distributed more equitably across communities.

Moreover, the ITPA will play a crucial role in training and developing the workforce within the tourism sector. Workshops and training programs will be organized to enhance the skills of those working in hospitality, travel services, and other related fields. This initiative is intended to improve service quality and customer satisfaction, establishing a reputation for excellence in Indian tourism.

Boosting Domestic Tourism: A Vital Focus

While attracting international visitors is a primary goal, the ITPA will also prioritize domestic tourism. Recognizing the importance of local travelers, the agency plans to launch campaigns targeting Indian citizens, encouraging them to explore their own country’s diverse offerings. This dual focus is expected to create a more resilient tourism sector, capable of withstanding global fluctuations in travel trends.

To support this initiative, the Ministry of Tourism is set to introduce special discounts and packages for domestic tourists. These offers will include reduced entry fees to popular attractions and discounted travel rates during off-peak seasons, making it more appealing for locals to travel within India.

The ITPA’s multifaceted approach aims to create a balanced tourism ecosystem that not only attracts foreign tourists but also nurtures domestic travel. By fostering pride in local attractions, the agency hopes to instill a sense of ownership among citizens, who can serve as ambassadors for their country’s tourism.

As India embarks on this ambitious tourism overhaul, the success of the ITPA will depend on its ability to execute these strategies effectively. The government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure, promoting public-private partnerships, and boosting domestic tourism reflects a forward-thinking approach aimed at positioning India as a global leader in travel and tourism.

Looking ahead, the establishment of the Integrated Tourism Promotion Agency represents a pivotal moment for India’s tourism industry. By integrating efforts across sectors and focusing on both international and domestic markets, the ITPA is poised to drive significant growth. If executed well, these initiatives could redefine the tourism landscape in India, opening up new avenues for economic development and cultural exchange.
