In a significant move to boost Medical Value Tourism, Union Minister Piyush Goyal unveiled a comprehensive five-point plan aimed at positioning India as a premier destination for international patients. Announced on September 7, 2026, the initiative seeks to capitalize on India’s existing strengths in the healthcare sector while enhancing its global appeal. Goyal emphasized that with the right strategies, India can attract a larger share of the $100 billion global medical tourism market.

    Strategic Framework for Growth

The five-point plan lays out a strategic framework to enhance India‘s medical tourism offerings. Firstly, the government will focus on improving infrastructure in major healthcare facilities, ensuring they meet international standards. This includes state-of-the-art technology and highly trained medical personnel. Goyal noted, “By upgrading our healthcare infrastructure, we can provide world-class services that will draw patients from across the globe.” Additionally, the plan includes initiatives to streamline visa processes for international patients, making it easier for them to travel to India for treatment. Originally reported by CNBC TV18.

Secondly, the government aims to promote collaborations between Indian healthcare providers and international organizations. This will not only enhance the quality of care but also help in sharing best practices and innovative medical technologies. Goyal pointed out that partnerships can significantly improve the treatment options available to patients, thereby increasing India’s competitiveness in the medical tourism sector.

    Focus on Affordability and Accessibility

Affordability is a key aspect of the plan. Goyal highlighted India’s competitive pricing compared to other countries, stating that patients can save up to 80% on medical procedures compared to costs in developed nations. For instance, coronary artery bypass surgery can cost around $5,000 in India, while the same procedure might cost upwards of $100,000 in the United States. This significant price difference is a major factor that attracts foreign patients.

Moreover, accessibility will be enhanced through the establishment of special medical tourism packages that include not just treatment but also travel arrangements, accommodation, and post-operative care. These packages are designed to provide a comprehensive solution to international patients, ensuring a hassle-free experience from arrival to recovery.

    Marketing and Promotion Strategies

The fourth point in Goyal’s plan focuses on robust marketing strategies to promote India as a medical tourism destination. The government intends to launch a dedicated campaign targeting potential patients in key markets such as the United States, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Leveraging digital platforms and social media will be a priority to reach a wider audience.

Additionally, collaborations with travel agencies and online platforms will be explored to create awareness about India’s healthcare offerings. According to Goyal, “A strong marketing strategy is essential to showcase the expertise of Indian doctors and the advanced healthcare facilities available in our country.” The government will also participate in international health fairs and tourism expos to directly engage with potential patients and healthcare industry stakeholders.

    Enhancing Patient Experience and Safety

Lastly, the plan emphasizes enhancing the overall patient experience and safety. This includes ensuring that all healthcare providers adhere to international safety standards and that patients receive personalized care from the moment they arrive. Goyal mentioned that maintaining high standards of hygiene and patient safety would be pivotal in building trust among international patients.

Furthermore, the initiative will also focus on cultural sensitivity training for healthcare staff to cater to the diverse needs of international patients. By understanding cultural nuances, Indian healthcare providers can offer a more welcoming environment, which is crucial for foreign patients seeking medical care.

As India gears up to implement this five-point plan, the government is optimistic about significantly increasing its share of the burgeoning medical tourism market. With a commitment to quality, affordability, and accessibility, India aims to not only attract more patients but also solidify its reputation as a global healthcare hub. The vision articulated by Piyush Goyal indicates a promising future for India’s medical tourism sector, potentially transforming it into a $9 billion industry by 2028, thereby creating jobs and boosting the economy.
