The NITI Aayog has unveiled an ambitious roadmap aimed at revitalizing India’s tourism sector, with a focus on sustainable growth and infrastructure enhancement. This initiative aims to attract 60 million international tourists by 2028, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy. The plan was announced during a dedicated session held on July 2, 2026, emphasizing the sector’s potential to create jobs and stimulate local economies.

Transformative Goals for the tourism sector

Setting its sights on substantial growth, the NITI Aayog’s roadmap outlines a vision to elevate India into one of the world’s top tourism destinations. By 2028, the government aims to increase the contribution of tourism to the GDP from 7.7% to 10%. This upward trajectory will be supported by a projected rise in employment opportunities, targeting an increase of 10 million jobs within the industry. Originally reported by TravelBiz Monitor.

The initiative includes a multi-faceted approach to enhance infrastructure, including improved connectivity, better accommodation facilities, and the promotion of lesser-known destinations. The NITI Aayog emphasizes that the plan will not only cater to international tourists but also encourage domestic travel, thereby ensuring a balanced growth strategy.

    Investment and Financial Support

To realize these ambitious goals, significant financial investments are required. The NITI Aayog has proposed an investment of approximately ₹1 lakh crore (around $13 billion) over the next five years. This funding will be allocated towards upgrading existing facilities, building new ones, and enhancing digital infrastructure for tourism services.

Public-private partnerships (PPPs) will play a crucial role in this funding model. By collaborating with private entities, the government aims to leverage their expertise and efficiency, ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. This collaborative effort is expected to yield a more attractive environment for investors and enhance the overall tourism experience.

    Sustainability at the Forefront

A key aspect of the NITI Aayog’s roadmap is its commitment to sustainable tourism. Recognizing the environmental impact of tourism, the plan emphasizes eco-friendly practices and responsible travel. The government aims to promote green tourism initiatives that protect natural and cultural heritage while providing economic benefits to local communities.

Moreover, the roadmap outlines the need for training and capacity-building initiatives to equip the workforce with skills necessary for sustainable tourism practices. The focus will be on creating awareness among tourists about responsible travel, which is vital for preserving India’s rich biodiversity and cultural diversity.

    Enhancing Digital Infrastructure

In today’s digital age, the NITI Aayog recognizes the importance of technology in enhancing the tourism experience. The plan includes a robust digital infrastructure component that aims to integrate technology into various aspects of tourism, from booking systems to virtual tours of attractions.

By leveraging technology, the government hopes to streamline processes, making it easier for tourists to plan their trips and access information. Additionally, the use of data analytics will help in understanding tourist preferences, enabling better-targeted marketing strategies. This tech-driven approach is poised to revolutionize the tourism landscape in India, making it more accessible and user-friendly.

The NITI Aayog’s unveiling of this roadmap is a pivotal moment for India’s tourism sector, signaling a renewed commitment to growth and sustainability. As the country prepares to welcome millions of tourists, the focus on infrastructure, financial investment, and responsible practices may well position India as a leading global destination. The success of this initiative will largely depend on effective execution and collaboration between various stakeholders in the tourism ecosystem.
