In a groundbreaking initiative for the Indian tourism sector, the Association of Professional Tourist Guides of India (APTA) and Rapido have unveiled the country’s first-ever driver-cum-guide program. This innovative scheme aims to train and certify drivers as licensed tourist guides, enhancing the travel experience for visitors across India. The announcement was made on May 24, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the integration of transportation and tourism services.

    Enhancing the Tourist Experience

The driver-cum-guide program is designed to elevate the quality of service provided to tourists by blending the roles of drivers and guides. With this program, drivers will receive comprehensive training that equips them with essential knowledge about local cultures, history, and attractions. According to APTA President, Rajesh Khanna, “This initiative will not only improve the overall experience for tourists but also create new employment opportunities for drivers in the tourism sector.” The certification process will ensure that drivers possess the necessary skills to engage with tourists effectively, answering questions and providing insights about various destinations. Participants in the program will undergo rigorous training, covering topics such as communication skills, local history, and cultural sensitivity. Upon completion, they will be awarded a certification that qualifies them to operate as licensed tourist guides. This dual role is expected to enhance the interaction between tourists and their drivers, making journeys more informative and enjoyable.

    Investment and Training Costs

To roll out this program, APTA and Rapido have committed a significant investment, totaling approximately ₹10 crore. This funding will support the development of training modules and certification processes necessary for the program’s success. As part of the initiative, training centers will be established in various cities across India, making it accessible for drivers nationwide.

Candidates interested in becoming certified will be required to pay a nominal fee of ₹5,000 for the training program. This fee covers all training materials and resources, ensuring that drivers receive comprehensive education without a heavy financial burden. The program aims to accommodate around 5,000 drivers in its first year, with plans for expansion based on demand and success rates.

    Industry Response and Future Implications

The launch of the driver-cum-guide program has garnered positive feedback from various stakeholders in the tourism industry. Travel agencies and tour operators view this initiative as a step forward in enhancing the quality of services offered to tourists. Manisha Sharma, a leading travel operator, noted, “This program is a game-changer. It not only empowers drivers but also enriches the tourist experience, making India a more attractive destination for international travelers.”

Experts believe that this innovative approach could set a precedent for other countries looking to improve their tourism infrastructure. By merging the roles of drivers and tourist guides, APTA and Rapido are addressing a crucial gap in the travel experience, where drivers often lack the knowledge to engage tourists meaningfully.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Tourism in India

As the program gains traction, both APTA and Rapido are optimistic about its potential to reshape the tourism landscape in India. Plans are already underway to incorporate technology into the training process, with the possibility of online modules and virtual reality (VR) simulations to enhance learning experiences.

Additionally, the program is expected to evolve based on feedback from participants and tourists alike. Continuous improvement is crucial to ensure that the program meets the changing demands of the tourism sector. With India positioning itself as a global tourism hotspot, initiatives like the driver-cum-guide program are vital for maintaining competitiveness and enhancing visitor satisfaction.

In summary, the collaboration between APTA and Rapido marks a significant step forward in India’s tourism industry. By equipping drivers with the skills and knowledge necessary to serve as guides, the initiative not only benefits tourists but also empowers local drivers, creating a more sustainable and enriching travel environment. As the program rolls out, it will undoubtedly set new standards for tourism in India, paving the way for future innovations in the sector.
