Travelers planning to visit Kerala and Tamil Nadu should prepare for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected to hit the coastal regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for severe weather conditions, which could significantly impact travel plans in these picturesque areas.

IMD Issues Weather Warnings for Coastal Areas

The India Meteorological Department has cautioned residents and tourists alike about impending heavy rainfall and thunderstorms along the coasts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These weather patterns are projected to begin on February 22, 2026, and may persist for several days. Rainfall amounts could reach between 100 to 200 mm in low-lying areas, particularly affecting regions such as Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, and Kanyakumari and Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. Originally reported by The Times of India.

Furthermore, the IMD has warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h, which could result in disruptions to local transport services and pose risks for those engaging in maritime activities. Travelers are urged to monitor weather reports closely and heed any advisories issued by local authorities.

Travel Disruptions and Precautions for Tourists

As the storm approaches, travelers to Kerala and Tamil Nadu should be aware of potential disruptions to flights, train services, and road transport. Airlines may alter schedules, and train services could be delayed or canceled, particularly in regions most affected by severe weather. Tourists are advised to check with their travel providers for the latest updates and to consider rescheduling plans if necessary.

Local tourism bodies are also emphasizing the importance of safety. They recommend that visitors stay indoors during severe weather events and avoid unnecessary travel. For those already in the region, popular tourist destinations like the backwaters of Alleppey and the beaches of Kovalam may experience temporary closures or restricted access due to safety concerns.

Local Government Preparedness and Response Plans

In light of the weather warnings, local governments in Kerala and Tamil Nadu are activating their emergency response plans. Relief teams are being mobilized, and shelters are being prepared for those who may be displaced by flooding or other weather-related incidents. In Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the state is on high alert and that all agencies are working to ensure public safety.

Additionally, fishermen in the coastal regions have been advised to refrain from venturing out to sea during the storm. The IMD has also advised that fishing vessels be secured to prevent loss or damage. Local authorities will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

Impact on Local Economy and Tourism

The anticipated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms could have a significant impact on the local tourism economy, particularly in Kerala, which is known for its vibrant tourism sector. With the onset of the monsoon season, many tourists flock to the region to experience its natural beauty and culture. However, adverse weather conditions may deter visitors, leading to a potential decline in revenue for local businesses dependent on tourism.

In Tamil Nadu, coastal towns such as Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry are popular destinations, especially during this time of year. The local economy, which heavily relies on tourism, may feel the effects of cancellations and reduced foot traffic due to the storms. Business owners are urged to remain flexible and prepare for possible adjustments to their services in response to the changing conditions.

As conditions continue to evolve, travelers are encouraged to stay informed and make safety their top priority. Whether it’s seeking alternative accommodations or waiting for the weather to clear, making informed decisions can help ensure a safer travel experience.

While the heavy rains and thunderstorms forecasted for Kerala and Tamil Nadu present challenges, the resilience of local communities and the proactive measures taken by authorities can help mitigate risks. As the weather situation develops, both tourists and residents alike must remain vigilant and prepared to adapt to changing conditions.
