Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya recently emphasized the need for stronger trade, investment, and tourism relations with India during her visit to New Delhi. Speaking at a business forum on February 27, 2026, Amarasuriya highlighted the significant role India plays in Sri Lanka’s economic landscape. She called for collaborative efforts to bolster bilateral ties, which she described as vital for both nations’ growth.

    Strengthening Economic Partnerships

During her address, Prime Minister Amarasuriya noted that India’s investment in Sri Lanka has already reached approximately $2 billion. This investment covers various sectors, including energy, telecommunications, and infrastructure. She stated that the two countries should aim to increase this figure, setting a target of $5 billion in the next five years. The Prime Minister emphasized the potential for collaboration in technology and green energy, areas where both nations can leverage their strengths to foster innovation. “We must capitalize on our geographical proximity and cultural ties to enhance trade relations,” Amarasuriya said. She pointed out that India is one of Sri Lanka’s largest trading partners. In 2025, bilateral trade stood at $6.5 billion, a figure Amarasuriya hopes to double. She believes that by reducing trade barriers and improving logistical frameworks, both countries can enjoy mutual benefits.

Tourism as a Key Growth Area

Tourism remains a critical sector for both Sri Lanka and India. Amarasuriya remarked that tourist arrivals from India account for nearly 30% of Sri Lanka’s total inbound tourism. In 2025, approximately 1.5 million Indian tourists visited Sri Lanka, significantly contributing to the country’s economy. The Prime Minister expressed her desire to see this number grow by 25% over the next two years.

“Tourism can serve as a bridge to strengthen our people-to-people connections,” she stated, urging collaborations between travel agencies and promotional campaigns to attract more Indian tourists. The Prime Minister also proposed joint tourism packages that highlight the cultural and historical ties between the two nations. This initiative aims to create a mutual understanding and appreciation of each other’s heritage.

    Addressing Challenges in Bilateral Relations

While the prospects for enhanced cooperation are promising, Amarasuriya acknowledged existing challenges that both countries must address. She pointed to the need for improved visa processes and reduced bureaucratic hurdles that often deter potential investors and tourists. By streamlining these processes, she believes that India and Sri Lanka can facilitate smoother exchanges.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister urged both governments to engage in regular dialogue to resolve outstanding issues. “We cannot afford to let misunderstandings hinder our progress,” she said, expressing confidence that open communication can pave the way for collaborative solutions. Her remarks underline the importance of diplomacy in fostering a conducive environment for business and tourism.

The Road Ahead for Bilateral Cooperation

As Sri Lanka seeks to revitalize its economy post-pandemic, the Prime Minister’s call for stronger ties with India comes at a crucial time. The potential for increased trade and tourism could serve as a significant boost to Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts. By fostering a more dynamic economic partnership, both nations can unlock new opportunities that benefit their respective populations.

So, Harini Amarasuriya’s visit to India marks a pivotal moment in enhancing Sri Lanka’s relationship with its neighbor. With ambitious targets set for trade and tourism growth, she has set the stage for a collaborative future. As both countries navigate the challenges ahead, their shared commitment to strengthening ties will play a vital role in shaping a prosperous economic landscape.
