In a significant diplomatic move, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni underscored the deepening ties between India and Italy during her recent visit to New Delhi. The discussions, held on May 21, 2026, emphasized collaboration across key sectors such as defence, energy, tourism, and trade, setting a promising trajectory for bilateral relations.

    Defence Cooperation Takes Center Stage

The defence sector emerged as a focal point of Meloni’s discussions with Indian officials. Italy has emerged as a crucial partner for India, particularly in the realm of military equipment and technology. In her remarks, Meloni highlighted the ongoing Initiatives to boost defence exports from Italy to India, which are expected to significantly enhance India’s military capabilities. She stated, “The cooperation between our nations in defence is not just about equipment; it’s about building a strategic partnership that strengthens our security interests.” Originally reported by Business Today.

This partnership is particularly important as India seeks to reduce its reliance on traditional defence suppliers. To that end, Italy has committed to providing advanced naval systems and technology transfer agreements, which will enable India to bolster its indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

    Energy Collaboration: A Sustainable Future

Energy sustainability and cooperation were also at the forefront of the discussions. With Italy being a leader in renewable energy technologies, Meloni expressed a keen interest in collaborating with India to enhance its energy security. She mentioned, “Together, we can work towards innovative solutions in renewable energy that not only benefit our countries but also contribute to global sustainability goals.”

The two nations are focusing on solar and wind energy projects, with plans to share technological expertise and investments. India, which aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, sees Italy’s experience as invaluable. Italian firms are poised to invest in solar panel manufacturing and offshore wind farms in India, creating jobs and promoting green energy.

Tourism and Trade: Bridging Cultural Gaps

Tourism, an essential pillar of both economies, also received attention in Meloni’s address. The Italian PM pointed out the importance of increasing tourist exchanges between the two nations, stating, “Italy welcomes Indian tourists with open arms, and we believe that cultural exchanges will strengthen our ties further.”

Currently, the number of Indian tourists visiting Italy has seen a steady increase, with a reported rise of 25% over the past year. This growth has prompted discussions about enhancing direct flight connectivity between major cities in India and Italy, aiming to facilitate easier travel for tourists. Both countries are expected to launch joint marketing campaigns to promote each other’s cultural heritage and tourism potential.

On the trade front, Meloni announced ambitious targets, aiming to double bilateral trade within the next five years. As of 2025, trade between India and Italy stood at approximately €8 billion, and both leaders expressed optimism about reaching €16 billion by 2031. This will involve collaborations in sectors like textiles, automotive, and pharmaceuticals.

    A Forward-Looking Partnership

The visit culminated in several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at fostering cooperation in various sectors. Meloni emphasized the historical ties between the two nations, stating, “Italy and India share a rich history that is the foundation of our partnership. We must build on this legacy to create a prosperous future together.”

Both leaders agreed to convene annual summits to review progress and explore new avenues for collaboration. The establishment of a joint working group will facilitate ongoing dialogue, ensuring that the momentum built during this visit continues into the future.

As India and Italy embark on this new chapter of cooperation, the potential for mutual benefits appears vast. From defence to energy, tourism, and trade, both nations are poised to leverage their strengths for a more prosperous future. Meloni’s visit marks a pivotal moment in fostering deeper ties that will not only benefit their respective economies but also contribute to regional stability and growth.
